In anticipation of the arrival of the Soviets

Reported by History, the Auschwitz-Brikenau region, in Poland were extermination and concentration camps when Germany occupied the country during World War II. Most of those arrested were Jews from all continents. The camp consists of broad sections I, II, and III. There are also 40 smaller "satellite" camps.

Auschwitz II Camp, Birkenau, was founded in October 1941. It was the largest part of the camp and the most famous place for the mass murder of European Jews.

The Nazis created a murderous complex that was designed horribly. The camp consisted of 300 prison barracks, four "baths" in which prisoners were killed with gas, cellars and ovens for cremation of corpses.

Thousands of Nazi prisoners, mostly Jewish, were also used for medical experiments supervised by the camp doctor, Josef Mengele, known as the "Angel of Death." In their efforts against the Nazis, the Red Army has advanced deeper into Poland since mid-January. After liberating Warsaw and Krakow, Soviet troops headed for Auschwitz.

In anticipation of the arrival of the Soviets, the German Gestapo began a sadistic killing in the camp. The Nazis shot sick prisoners and blew up crematoria in a desperate attempt to destroy evidence of their crime.

When the Red Army finally broke through, Soviet troops found 648 bodies and more than 7,000 people who survived hunger. There were also six warehouses full of hundreds of thousands of women's clothing, men's clothing, and shoes that the Nazis had no time to burn at that time.
